Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC

The Batteries Directive targets at a reduction of hazardous substance in waste by battery and accumulators. Therefore, the Directive limits mercury and cadmium. Furthermore, batteries shall be collected separately and have to be material treated.
The Batteries Directive contains objectives with regard to putting onto the market, the take back and the environmentally sound disposal of batteries. The member states have to ensure that:

• Producers do not put batteries and accumulators onto the market that do not correspond to the limitations of substances of the Directive
• Collective schemes are installed for portable batteries and accumulators that allow end users to discharge from batteries free of charge and close to their homes
• Collection rates are achieved and batteries are treated correctly and on a high standard.

The Directive differentiates into portable batteries, industrial batteries and car batteries.
